Banfield Responds!

I'm very pleased and impressed that Banfield, The Pet Hospital responded to my previous post!

I'm impressed when a huge corporation digs out a small potato like me. I think corporations need to be aware of what the public is saying AND react appropriately. And Banfield did just that.
"Banfield The Pet Hospital said...
Banfield, The Pet Hospital is not associated or affiliated with any religious organizations or groups. We are an equal opportunity employer and our associates are free to practice whatever religion they choose. However, as a practice, our associates are asked to refrain from expressing their religious views within the workplace and with clients. In the instance of the job posting regarding our Stamford, Conn. Hospital, the posting was not posted by, or authorized by, Banfield, The Pet Hospital. Above all, our doctors and other veterinary professionals are committed to practicing the highest-quality of veterinary medicine and our priority is providing the best care possible to the Pets we treat.
June 29, 2010 4:49 PM"
But, I'd feel even better if they said that they were taking some degree of action with the Stamford, CT location regarding the ad that was posted.  And, I'm more than willing to ask my friend if she knows the name of the vet in the Norwalk, CT location who was so eager to put her pet to death. I can easily provide this information via private e-mail.

Is This Appropriate...

...and is the general public aware that Banfield Pet Hospital is a veterinarian with a religious affiliation?

Here it is, too, in case the posting is no longer available (click to enlarge):

I don't want to judge, and I certainly don't want to offend anyone. But is this right? Should a large corporation like PetSmart affiliate themselves with a company that has blatant religious connections?

I had my suspicions about this company when a friend brought her dog to a Banfield last year when her dog was sick and Banfield was the closest "vet" to her home.

The dog was very sick, and became snippy with the vet. The vet, who, instead of reacting appropriately and asking the woman to muzzle the dog so he could examine him properly, told her to euthanize it then and there. When she looked at the vet like he had 14 heads he said "we" are (something along the lines of) superior to animals in God's eyes and we shouldn't put up with that type of behavior. Huh? You're a veterinarian. You're supposed to determine why the dog isn't feeling well, and hopefully make him better. Needless to say, she left and took her dog to another, private practice.

Comments? How do you feel about this?

    All about ME!

We were on Mayzie's blog where she had a quiz from Mango and Dexter's blog, which started at the Lovely Little Miss Pearl's place. Following so far?

The idea is to learn a little more about each other. So, here goes:

    THE BASICS

    1.) Name and Age:

    Charlie, 5 1/2 years
    2.) Breed:

    Shiba Inu/Pit Bull Terrier mix
    3.) Nickname(s):
Chicken Charlie, Chunky Monkey (although, I don't know why, I'm not fat!), Monkey Face (anyone see a theme?), Punkinhead, Charlie Cheese
    4.) Where'd ya come from?
PAWS - Pet Animal Welfare Society, in Norwalk, CT when I was 10 weeks old.

    FAVORITES

    1.) Toy:

All of them! My rope toys, stuffies (which I never pull apart, but Buster does), Boodas, and TENNIS BALLS! I LOVE tennis balls! Oh, and Ollie. He makes a great toy.
    2.) Snack:

Peanut butter! It's the best thing ever invented by you humans!
    3.) Human person:

What a silly question. My mommy, of course!
    FUNNY STUFF

    1.) Worst habit:

All of them - everything I do. Like beating up on the other dogs, barking at everyone and everything that walks by the house, chasing squirrels like I can run up a tree. Oh, and just looking really cute. :)
    2.) Most embarrassing moment:
Whenever I get caught... Then I do a silly smile:
    Snagged again...

3.) Family dynamic (this is a question for those of you with more than one animal in the house. i.e. who is alpha? who is the cuddler? who is the naughty one? etc. I just want to know how you fit into the family!)
I'm the alpha (no, not really, Lucy's the boss, but self-confidence is very important.).

4.) Your humans' FAVORITE thing about you!:
Everything! I'm just a big, cuddly monkey!

    Now it's your turn!

    Sample-in-Progress

Not knowing what breed mix Oliver is is driving me a little nuts. I do know that he's a crazy, lovable, and loyal mutt, and that's what really counts. But I always thought my next dog would be a Pit Bull, not some kind of hound mix.

    I am a handsome devil, aren't I?

Oliver has all of the makings of a hound. Nose to the ground, floppy ears, long and lanky (okay, my apologies to the Dachshunds and Bassets).

Lady with the camera, quit it, willya?

Of course, there's the crazy tail that's missing a few inches, but we'll never know that story. It still wags like crazy and gets his point across!

Hey! Where'd the rest of my tail go?!

Ollie gets along great with the other dogs. And Charlie is in love with her little brother. The other dogs are all about 12 years old, and they've had enough of her playing. So having a play pal has really made her a lot happier.

Usurper. As soon as my guillotine is back from the
    shop, it's curtains for you.

I am a regal pooch. I will take over this household.
    You will obey me.

So what is he? I know Trouper is a Border Collie, Lucy's a mini-Australian Shepherd, Buster's a Parson Russell Terrier, and Charlie is a Shiba Inu/Pit Bull mix. But what mix is Oliver, really?

Well, I decided to do a DNA test on him. I got a Canine Heritage Breed Test and swabbed his cheek. This pup is so eager to please, swabbing his cheek was a breeze. Any of the others would have fought me tooth and nail. And we're talking much more tooth, believe me.

I sent the sample to the company the last week of May, and it's supposed to take 4-6 weeks to get results. So the toe tapping has begun. I'm getting antsy and it's only been three weeks. I keep checking the site for updates, but all I see is "sample in progress." It's driving me crazy!

Both my brother and the vet have votes in for Rhodesian Ridgeback mix. I see Redbone Coonhound. Of course, this picture at the Canine Heritage site looks just like Ollie, and it's a Boxer/St. Bernard mix (yikes!). So who knows? Only the DNA will tell.

Of course there are some caveats. DNA tests are only as good as the markers they test for. In other words, if they don't test for "Poodle," your dog isn't a Poodle as far as they're concerned, no matter what your AKC papers say. But the Canine Heritage test looks for over 100 breeds, so it's a start. Redbone Coonhound and Rhodesian Ridgeback are both on there, and so is Staffordshire Bull Terrier. American Pit Bull Terrier isn't, though (hey, you never know!, and a girl could dream...).

I'll keep you posted. But the results had better come in soon!

Vick Misses Appearance, Shows No Remorse

Sounds familiar, though, doesn't it. He disappointed 1,500 paying partygoers in the process, and stuck a 23-year-old newbie promoter with a loss of about $20,000.

His manager claimed that his flight was cancelled, but inquiries with the airlines proved that that wasn't true. The "dependable" Vick missed his flight and in turn missed his appearance for which he received one half of his $10,000 fee up-front. The promoter had also agreed to cover $5,000 in travel expenses for Vick.

The best part? When he promoter spoke with Vick, Vick was rude and unapologetic. Shocking, I know!

    Vick never ceases to amaze.
